4 Simple Checks for a Healthy Puppy

4 Simple Checks for a Healthy Puppy

Puppyhood is a dog's most vulnerable stage and calls for careful attention. Here are four easy ways to keep an eye on a puppy's health.

1. Is weight increasing steadily?

Weight gain is a key indicator of puppy health. If weight isn't rising steadily and normally, beyond congenital factors or illness, the cause may be insufficient nutrition. Watch how the puppy eats and offer small frequent meals, or leave out a generous amount of puppy food for free feeding. Also watch the stools: frequent soft stools may mean overeating or a gut problem, so reduce portions moderately. If weight doesn't grow steadily after weaning, choose a more suitable puppy food.

2. Is the puppy constantly crying?

Apart from eating, puppies mostly sleep and rarely make noise. Persistent crying may mean hunger or discomfort.

3. Any abnormality of the spine or head?

Look at and gently feel the puppy's spine and head; if anything feels wrong, see a vet immediately.

4. Does water come out of the nose when drinking?

If so, the puppy may have a congenital cleft palate and should see a vet promptly.

If you notice any of the above, observe carefully and take the puppy to the vet when necessary.
