Q: Why do allergy problems keep coming back?

The immune system is like an army with clear divisions of labour. Helper T cells act as gatekeepers and come in two types, Th1 and Th2. They counterbalance each other to protect health — like a seesaw, when one side rises the other falls. We call this the immune seesaw.

Normal immune state: Th1 > Th2. When they detect a pathogen they summon killer cells to destroy it, and the immune system works normally — your pet stays strong and healthy.

Allergic reaction: when Th2 > Th1, harmless substances — pollen, dander, dust — put Th2 on alert; it rallies killer cells and antibodies for an all-out assault. The body releases inflammatory chemicals and enters a state of readiness, producing the familiar allergic conditions: atopic dermatitis, asthma, allergic rhinitis. Allergy is essentially an over-reaction of the immune system.

Q: So how do we calm the over-reaction?

This is where the immune seesaw comes in: restore its balance and the allergic response eases. Fish oil is rich in Omega-3, an unsaturated fatty acid that promotes Th1 while suppressing Th2, relieving allergy symptoms.

Another fatty acid, Omega-6, promotes Th2 — eat too much Omega-6 and inflammation worsens.

So an allergic flare may well be the body telling you the ratio of these two fatty acids is off. That's why, when a pet has allergies, we recommend more fish oil (an Omega-3 source). Anti-allergy probiotics also support Th1 production and lower the Th2 response, easing your pet's suffering.
