Real Power IDEA: Companion Can FAQ

Real Power IDEA: Companion Can FAQ

After reading the story behind the Companion Can, you're bound to have questions — so let's get straight to them.

Recap — what is the Companion Can? A first for Taiwan and a new approach to semi-wet feeding: a cat food can designed specifically to be paired with dry food. One meal of kibble plus one meal of can gives balanced core nutrition and maximum health-care effect.

Part 1: Is the Companion Can right for us?

1. I currently add a nourishing broth pouch to my cat's kibble for hydration. Should I keep "kibble + broth" or switch to "kibble (reduced) + Companion Can"?

Either works. Both combinations are nutritionally more than adequate, so it comes down to your cat's preference.

2. If it's so complete, is the Companion Can suitable for a fully wet-fed cat?

Its specification exceeds AAFCO and NRC recommendations, so it does meet a cat's daily needs. But because it was designed to pair with kibble, its overall calorie density is a little lower; for a big eater, meeting a full day's needs on cans alone may not be cost-effective. It really suits semi-wet-fed cats best.

3. Could the can I'm feeding now be leaving my cat short of — or over — certain nutrients?

We recommend looking at total daily intake: first estimate what your cat's body weight requires, then how much they eat and how much kibble and can that is, and add it up. That was the original purpose of the Companion Can — to make it easy for owners to work out the pairing.

Part 2: What's in it?

4. Is the Companion Can a "low-phosphorus" can?

First it helps to understand why chasing low phosphorus isn't always right, what a low-phosphorus can is, and who needs one. In short: healthy cats don't need a low-phosphorus can. If your cat has kidney concerns and needs phosphorus control, we suggest discussing the Companion Can's nutritional specification with your vet.

5. Does it contain controversial gelling agents?

No. To bind the pâté and give a good texture we use psyllium husk — a prebiotic and a natural, healthy gel source, 70–80% soluble dietary fibre, sometimes called the "king of land-based gels". It aids nutrient absorption, supports a healthy gut flora, and helps cats pass swallowed hair, reducing post-grooming discomfort.

6. Is it a complete-diet can, and how does it differ from one?

It meets AAFCO and NRC complete-diet standards, so nutritionally it is one. But complete-diet cans vary hugely, and Real Power designed different Companion Cans for different kibbles specifically for semi-wet-fed cats. For a cat that eats kibble plus can every day, the pairing of Real Power kibble and can delivers not just balanced core nutrition but outstanding health-care benefits — better and more complete than a complete-diet can alone.

7. I've never heard of heat-stable health nutrients. How is that achieved, and which nutrients qualify?

Minerals are inherently very heat-stable — in ingredient analysis, what remains after hundreds of degrees (ash) is mineral. Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K are also fairly heat-tolerant. Vitamin C is used in liposomal form for heat stability, and B vitamins are added in extra amounts to compensate for losses.

Part 3: How to feed it

8. What's the recommended feeding method? Does "half kibble, half can" mean half the grams? Mixed together?

We recommend feeding kibble and can separately for the best digestion and absorption — for example "kibble in the morning, can in the evening", which many owners already do. That divides the day's total intake into two meals: that's the "half and half".

9. Should I add water to increase hydration?

That depends on palatability. If your cat loves the taste and needs extra water, give it a try.

10. Can I warm it? My cat likes slightly warm food.

Yes. If it comes from the fridge or a cool storage place, warm it in a water bath or briefly in the microwave after decanting. For most cats, slightly warm (35–40 °C) food is more palatable.

Those are the most common questions. If you have more, see the Companion Can product page or message us.
